Bags deliver dignity for women in need
Last Christmas, Santa put aside his sack and delivered gifts in handbags.
Santa’s little helpers at the Public Sector Commission collected and donated almost 100 bags as part of the It’s In the Bag campaign to help homeless women in Australia.
The campaign, started in 2015 by volunteer organisation Share the Dignity, asks Australians to donate a handbag they no longer use, fill it with essential items and special gifts that would make a woman feel special and even pop a thoughtful note into the bag to show her that someone cares.
The bags were distributed to women’s refuges and drop-in centres for homeless women in time for Christmas.
Public Sector Commissioner Mal Wauchope said it was a great initiative and one strongly supported by the Commission and its staff. He said the Commission would look to coordinate the campaign in 2017 and invite other departments to join in.
More than 50,000 Australian women will find themselves homeless or sleeping rough this festive season.
