Child Safe Organisations WA seminars

Commissioner for Children and Young People

The Commissioner for Children and Young People is running free Child Safe Organisation WA workshops in March. The workshops, which will be held in the Perth metropolitan area are for non-for-profit, public and private sector organisations who work with children.

The program was developed by the Office of the Commissioner for Children and Young People to encourage organisations to develop a comprehensive daily approach to effectively protect children from abuse and neglect.

Mr Colin Pettit, Commissioner for Children and Young People said that children and young people have the right to feel safe and respected wherever they are.

‘I encourage managers from all organisations working with children to enrol in these workshops as this is the first step in an ongoing effort to improve child safe practices. In a child safe organisation, this commitment to protecting children is embedded in the organisational culture and the responsibility for taking action is understood and accepted at all levels from the chief executive officer to volunteers,’ Mr Pettit said.

The program includes workshops and a range of resources designed to help non-for-profit, public and private sector organisations develop and implement strategies that increase children’s safety.

An organisation’s child safe strategies must aim to reduce the likelihood of harm occurring, increase the likelihood that any harm is discovered and ensure there is an immediate and appropriate response to any disclosures, allegations or suspicions of harm.

The whole-day seminar will be held on Tuesday 1 May and Thursday 14 June 2018 at the Commissioner’s office in Subiaco. Registration is free and bookings can be made via the Commissioner’s website.

Further resources are available on the Commissioner’s website enabling all agencies to commence work immediately on strengthening their child safety policies and daily practices.
