New Zealand policy expert fronts leadership seminar

Public Sector Commission

Parallels between the New Zealand and Western Australian public sectors were drawn at the recent Leadership Seminar Series breakfast and Senior Executive Service seminars.

Presented by the Public Sector Commission in partnership with the Australia New Zealand School of Government, the guest speaker was Sally Washington, Program Manager of the Policy Project at the New Zealand Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The programme aims to improve policy quality and capability across the New Zealand Government.

Recently launched by New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, the Policy Project developed three interlinked policy improvement frameworks—for policy quality, skills and capability. The frameworks provide an infrastructure for supporting better decision making.
Ms Washington’s presentation on the issues facing the New Zealand public service resonated with the local audience. Attendees were particularly inspired by discussions on building collective policy capability and rethinking recruitment processes.

The Leadership Seminar Series provides aspiring leaders across the sector with the opportunity to meet and hear from influential speakers on current public administration topics.

The next speaker in the series is Associate Professor Zeger van der Wal, who will be visiting Perth on 13 December 2016. Registrations are now open. Professor van der Wal will discuss major global trends and challenges for public managers in a volatile and complex world.
