FOI Decision Writing Workshop
The Information Commissioner is pleased to present a free FOI Decision Writing Workshop for State and local government officers.
Agency FOI decision makers are required to make decisions about applications for documents under the Freedom of Information Act 1992 (the FOI Act) in accordance with that Act. This includes writing notices of decision that comply with the requirements of the FOI Act. This workshop is designed to enhance decision-makers’ skills and confidence in writing notices of decision under the FOI Act.
Participants will be expected to already have a basic understanding of the requirements of the FOI Act. Prior to the workshop they will be provided online training and pre-reading that must be completed prior to attending the workshop. The workshop will be interactive using written exercises and discussion.
Legal practitioners may claim CPD points for attendance at FOI training provided by this office.
This workshop is specifically designed for agency officers who are required to make decisions in response to access and amendment applications made under the FOI Act.
The role of decision-makers; writing a decision that considers whether personal information is exempt under clause 3(1) of Schedule 1 to the FOI Act; and writing a decision to a third party where the agency does not accept the third party’s claim that information is exempt under clause 4 of Schedule 1 to the FOI Act.
Participants will be aware of the requirements for writing a valid notice of decision and strategies to ensure compliance with those requirements.
